Honestly? It just seemed like unnecessary baggage. The DLC is lead through a future conversation between Kate and Oscar that helps fill in the gaps, making it more of an extended dialogue than actual gameplay. Players were given a lengthy prelude to explain how the events unfolded, but I still struggled to see how it had any relevance to the story as a whole. “An Automaton with a Plan” was certainly more straight-forward which I enjoyed, if only Syberia 3 could have been that easy. Players would have already seen the game through Oscar’s eyes briefly in Syberia 3, so it made sense that he would lead the DLC. Instead, it follows on from Kate Walker’s penultimate mission to uncover the hidden Youkol temple buried beneath the Olympia Stadium, where she has been reprimanded by American agent Nic Cantin and Oscar has to rescue her. I was initially sceptical as to how the story would continue as Oscar since he was rendered inactive at the end of Syberia 3. I must admit, I purchased “An Automaton with a Plan” as soon as I completed Syberia 3 as a part of me didn’t want the story to end.

It’s a professional piece that hasn’t quite been perfected. Syberia 3 offered something different to spark your curiosity, but it didn’t blow me away. There were some glaring political references scattered here and there, take the map of Baranour Park above for example, but it barely scratched the surface by adding a minor historical background to the narrative. the dynamic between Oscar and Kate felt friendly, but forced at times.Įssentially, Syberia 3 is like Tomb Raider on a budget. It was often painstakingly difficult to make any progress, but I always felt a personal sense of achievement each time I completed a puzzle. Second time around, I completed the game in just three days with around 13 hours of gameplay. Syberia 3’s soundtrack is beautiful and breathed life into the game.ĭespite its flaws, I could easily waste a whole day playing Syberia 3. There was no option to manually save, which rightly worried me as during my first playthrough the game glitched and I was unable to complete it. Players can change the difficulty at any time in the options menu as well as adjust the audio settings, but there was no option to turn up the brightness which made parts of the game difficult to see at times.

I found there was more depth to character with Oscar than there ever was with Kate through his human-like abilities and without his overall steampunk vibe, Syberia 3 would have lacked any real originality. It was here that I was introduced to Oscar, a self-operating automaton with an even sassier edge, as I have yet to play the first two installments. Baranour is a desolate amusement park racked by radiation and is where my journey concluded on my first playthrough.Īs cliché as it may sound, Baranour was my favourite part of the game with an area that I didn’t mind aimlessly exploring. Gameplay is as slow as the snow ostriches migration. Speech is sporadic and mouth movements often don’t match up with some sections skipping, but subtitles help keep players in the loop. Players can choose a gentle, forgiving approach or a more forceful one depending on how they’d like Kate’s character to develop.

the fictitious town of Valsembor brought back memories of my trip to the little Swiss city of Lucerne, with its famous wood-timbered bridge.Ĭonversations don’t flow naturally with the option to lead and select responses, with some used as leverage after investigating surrounding areas.

Interactivity is a bit trial and error, highlighted by a small, circular blinking yellow eye that appears when you’re close to an area of interest. The graphics are pleasing to the eye and border on artistic, with foreground elements in focus and background elements in soft focus. Syberia 3’s sense of place should be admired. When selected, filming camera icons signal a quick switch from a panoramic view to a close-up shot.
